8th December is a local holiday in Malta, a special day that celebrates the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and this year it will sadly fall on a Saturday; meaning there’s no extra time off work for the most of us. But since we'll be off anyway, might as well enjoy it, right? Apart from the village feasts taking place in Cospicua and Ibragg in Malta and Victoria and Qala in Gozo, here are a few activities to get you out of the house for the day.
APS Teatru Unplugged
The Manoel Theatre never disappoints, and for two nights, the third oldest working theatre in Europe will go unplugged. Book yourself some front row seats for one of the year’s most sought after events. Sing along to the classic tunes of rock ‘n’ roll or jam out to the modern songs performed on the gorgeous stage.
Natalis Notabilis
Rabat transforms itself into a Christmas wonderland where stalls are stacked through the narrow streets with handmade gifts and select artisan products traditional to the islands such as imbuljata - a warm chestnut and chocolate drink prepared in the neighbourhood Friary - as well as a vast food selection to keep your stomach content.
Christmas shopping at Tigné Point
Hit the largest Sliema mall for a spot of Christmas shopping and a visit to the Christmas market set outside the mall. Top of the range clothing stores will make your shopping list an easily achieved task while bookstores, food stores and other exciting retail outlets will get everyone’s gifts sorted in no time, regardless of the weather outside!
A trip to Gozo
The traffic might be a bit of an issue on the 8th, but if you're brave enough to get through the weather warnings, be sure to hit the queue early in the morning to make the most of your day in Gozo. Discover the green landscapes, superb restaurants and the simplicity of life while driving around the sister island for a break away from the norm.
Drinks in the capital
Valletta is beautiful during the Christmas period, with lights flickering throughout the night and people scurrying in an out of shops with bundles of bags in their clutched fists. Head to Valletta just before the sun goes down to snap a few shots at golden hour, just before you retreat to a bar for a tipple and a few nibbles.
Find a crib in the village
You’ll find so many signs around towns in Malta and Gozo denoting nativity scenes on display for all to see. Look out for the sign presepju or crib - a sign that will bring all its viewers joy. Appreciate the artistic renditions and the detail in all the figurines’ faces as they assume their positions for the duration of the Christmas celebrations.
Keep warm, get active and make the most of your Saturday on this special day on the Maltese islands.
