5 hop-tastic local beers you just have to tap!
A little brew never hurt anyone

Kristina Cassar Dowling

Finding the right beer is not always the easiest thing, picking the right beer to your taste or, even better, for your current mood is sometimes very challenging. But what if we told you that Farsons have the top beers to tickle your fancy, whatever the situation. Let’s have a look…

Cisk Lager for the relaxed Sunday afternoon

If you’re into the truly authentic kinda stuff and appreciate heritage and originality, then Cisk Lager is probably the brew for you. Faithful to its original recipe since 1929, this king of lager is perfect with a steaming bowl of shellfish or a cheeky barbeque when the sun's shining.

The original Cisk Lager has a golden colour due to its bottom-fermented technique. This beer has a well-balanced character, a rich hoppy aroma and a slight bitterness that quenches your thirst and brightens up your afternoon.

Cisk Excel for that mid-week treat

So you're an active kinda fella huh? Watching that carb intake and avoiding beer like the plague? Well fear not, the time has come to crack open an ice-cold beer and guzzle it down without inhibition. Enter the Cisk Excel godsend - a 50 per cent less carb beer with the original Cisk Lager taste (and thankfully, the same amount of alcohol too).

This skinny chap won the title ‘Best Low-Carb Beer’ in the 2007 World Beer Awards in the UK. It pairs wonderfully with fresh fish or poultry (and a little spot of self-pity).

Cisk Pilsner for a little more dazzle

Crisp, yet full bodied, bitter, yet balanced, the Cisk Pilsner is all about that intense flavour created with the finest Pilsner malt and Saaz Noble hops. This guy is great for a celebration - for those days where your kid got an A in history or your wife cooked up that show stopping lasagne you love so much!

The Cisk Pilsner goes down rather smoothly with fresh cheeses, fish dishes such as smoked salmon on a cream cheese bagel or even a creamy risotto with flavoured meats - try these combos and tell us what you think.

Blue Label for those slightly crisp evenings

Luckily, most evenings in Maltese winters are rather crisp: the air tingles on the tip of your nose and the tips of your ears turn a subtle pink. Out come the stews and roasts for dinner and, if you’re local, you know that the only accompaniment for a rich meat stew is none other than the dark brown, Blue Label.

A top-fermenting ale hopped and mixed with mild malt that inspires its rich colour, this bevvie is iconically smooth, with a mild taste which is distinctive due to its chocolate and caramel notes. Blue Label is a staple in Maltese culture - there’s nothing like that first sip on a crisp winter evening.

Double Red for the sweeter parts of life

The Farsons Double Red is a classic! Enough said. But, really, this Double Red carries a deep brown colour with a hoppy bitterness that is balanced out nicely by the malty sweetness. This strong character in the world of beer is best enjoyed with the sweeter things in life.

Try out the Double Red with a few chocolates or a sweet almond dessert to notice the elegant notes of the beer. If you’re not into the sweet stuff pair it up with a meat pie or a lamb dish.

There you have it. Five awesome local beers by Malta’s number one beer-making crew - try them out and let us know your favourite brews from the Farsons superstar range.
