On 18th December 1985, a horrific event struck, erasing the Christmas feel on the Maltese Islands. A bomb was placed on one of the Sliema police station’s window sills and exploded later on that same evening.

The incident injured several people, including three policemen and a 12-year-old girl who was travelling in a car nearby when the bomb went off. Constables Godfrey Cassar and Peter Barberi were seriously injured, as were Sergeant Joseph Micallef and the girl, Claudia Pecorella.

In a 2009 Times of Malta article, the newspaper reported that “neighbours who went to give assistance to the policemen described an ugly scene. PC Barberi lost a hand and had facial injuries. PC Cassar had splinter wounds to his right thigh and a shoulder fracture. Sgt Micallef had a back injury.”

The station itself suffered structural damages and windows across the road from the station were shattered as a result of the blast.
