winter

This Sunday, our clocks are changing to winter time, meaning we get to sleep an extra hour (YAS!). Needless to say, I personally love the winter time change, everything just seems cosier. I reached out to a few locals to get their take too, and I must say, I got some very mixed views!

Reasons why people LOVEEE the winter change:

winter

1. Let it be all year round!

Some love it so much, they’d love to have winter time all year round! Warm clothes, coffees, hot chocolate, blankets, and baked goods! Can you tell I’m excited?

2. Vampire vibes

Others described themselves as vampires and have more energy at night, so they prefer it when it gets darker (sounds a little creepy, just in time for Halloween!)

3. Better rested

It could be a psychological aspect, but people feel better rested because the days aren’t as long, so they have time to relax, and it's easier to call it a day.

Reasons why people HATE winter time (some with a passion!):

winter

1. Less productivity

A common reason among locals - lack of (perceived) productivity ranks high since there’s not much “time” in the day when it gets dark quickly. Which leads to the next point…

2. It gets dark way too quickly

This was a really popular reason. Many said that they start thinking it’s really late when it’s actually only around 5pm!

3. Short days

Many complained that they prefer the longer summer days as opposed to the short, dark, winter days.

time

Recent statistics found that more than 80 per cent of EU citizens are against biannual time changes, so much so that the European commission is looking to recommend that EU member states abandon the practice of changing the clocks in spring and autumn - and many people are on board with the decision, favouring summer time.

Many are of course in favour, arguing that longer daylight hours in the evening can help save energy and bolster productivity, while opponents have argued that the time change is easy to adapt to. A common argument is that the different EU countries have different geographic situations, raising the question of whether the European parliament is capable of finding a common denominator between them. Will citizens get their way? Guess we’ll have to wait and see, but in the meantime, aaahh... winter!
