Deep in my heart is desire to love...
Today, 21 years ago, Claudette Pace performed her iconic song Desire at the Eurovision Final. The song has since become an iconic one, even played at parties to this day, and gets everyone moving - no matter their generation!
The song
‘Desire’ was composed by renowned local composer Philip Vella with lyrics by Gerard James Borg. The song, while primarily in English, includes phrases in Maltese. It was the first time since 1972 that the Maltese language featured on the Eurovision stage.
The performance
The final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2000 took place on 13th May in Stockholm following Charlotte Nilsson’s 1999 win in Jerusalem with her song ‘Take Me to Your Heaven.’ This edition was quite the landmark one as the contest was broadcast live in Australia, Japan, the United States, and Canada via the internet for the very first time.
The postcards, which each country films, featured various Swedish themes incorporated with each nation. Malta’s postcard was filmed at the Stockholm Harbour and featured a sailboat with a sail that had a Maltese Cross on it.
Malta performed in seventh place on the night out of 24 countries and eventually came in eighth place after raking in 73 points. That year, Denmark’s the Olsen Brothers took home the gold with their song ‘Fly on the Wings of Love.’
