On this day, 132 years ago, the stunning Mosta Rotunda was elevated to the dignity of minor basilica. On 10^th July 1888, a document in Latin was sent from Rome, entitled “Regarding the Title of Minor Basilica that is to be given to the Mosta Parish in the Diocese of Malta.”

Only one can imagine the pride and honour this brought for Mosta locals and the entire nation, considering the fact that the Mosta church bears utter grandeur and is a gem that is often compared to Rome’s Pantheon through their similar architectural characteristics.

The above document acknowledges the hard work that the people put in to build such a majestic building instead of the old parish church, along with the work of the pastoral clergy. As a result, Rome thought that our Mosta church was deemed to be worthy of being elevated to the dignity of minor basilica. And well, the rest is pretty much history.
