For one day only, the Hagar Qim and Mnjadra temples are open to the public free of charge

If you’ve always wondered what it would be like to travel back to prehistoric times (and perhaps meet Fred Flintstone), take advantage of the public holiday this Saturday by visiting the megalithic temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra, which are open to the public free of charge.
These standing stones, dating back to the dawn of civilisation (circa 3,600-3,200BC), are among the oldest and most well-preserved prehistoric sites in the world, and are a mecca for the spiritual, the cultured and the curious. During the open day, you will get the opportunity to learn more about these enigmatic stone structures: there are two guided tours, which will be held at 11am and 2pm, and the adjacent interactive visitor centre will be open.

Despite over a century and a half of study, these temples remain shrouded in mystery. Not much is known about the builders themselves, but the orientation of the complex - facing East, towards the rising sun – indicates a deep connection with the movements of celestial bodies. The site itself is beautiful to behold: surrounded by Maltese garigue and overlooking the islet of Filfla, these freestanding stone structures are an evocative reminder of where we’ve come from.
