Wow! Check out these vibrant Edward Caruana Dingli paintings of Malta & Gozo in the early 1900s
Absolutely beautiful!

Emma Galea

Born in 1876, Edward Caruana Dingli was one of Malta’s most notable painters.

The Maltese artist was particularly known for his vibrant and colourful watercolour paintings depicting traditional and rural Maltese characters and scenes during the early 20th century.

He was mentored by none other than the renowned Maltese Italian artist, Giuseppe Cali who encouraged him to focus on realism with a touch of romantic idealism.

This is a concept which perfectly describes the following paintings described below:

A fisherman mending his nets in Mgarr, Gozo

A man milking a goat in a traditional Maltese town

The traditional Good Friday procession in Valletta

A Gozitan woman in the traditional Ghonnella walking through an alley in Victoria

A Maltese woman in traditional dress selling chickens

Praying at Valletta’s St John Con-Cathedral

The everyday life for families in Valletta

The beauty of Ghajn Tuffieha

Carnival in Valletta

A typical farm in the Maltese countryside

These are only a few of the many rural works that Edward Caruana Dingli has painted. Such works continue to give us a direct insight into the simplicity of Maltese life almost a century ago.

Apart from these kind of paintings, Edward Caruana Dingli was also known for his portraits of many distinguished figures that held high positions in Malta at the time.
