Long before the Malta International Airshow became a staple of the island’s event calendar, aviation enthusiasts were already gathering in droves for thrilling aerial spectacles. One such unforgettable moment took place on this day, 5th May, back in 1988 – five years before the official airshow launched.
Captured through the lens of Ray Polidano, Director of the Malta Aviation Museum, some nostalgic photos of that special day were shared on the museum’s Facebook page.
One of the highlights of the day was a breathtaking display by the Frecce Tricolori, Italy’s elite aerobatic team that brought excitement to the crowds at the Luqa airfield with an iconic performance.
Adding to the spectacle, an Agusta-Bell 212 from the Italian Air Force executed a rescue operation demonstration, showing off the pilot’s impressive skill, precision, and coordination.
This year’s international airshow will be taking place on the 27th and 28th of September, so there’s plenty to look forward to after summer!
