Ruby, ruby, ruby, ruby!

Kaiser Chiefs / Facebook
These guys never miss a beat and for those of you who are lucky ticket-holders, Thursday night promises to be a knock-out ride! Rock on with the Kaiser Chiefs this week and sing Ruby, I Predict a Riot, Everything is Average Nowadays and Everyday I Love You Less and Less – definitely not how we feel about this band!
Lighting up the silver screen:
Monday, 27 August from 8.30pm – 10.30pm: 11th Edition of Summer Chinese Film Festival, 2018 – the Chinese Garden of Serenity, St Lucia

Clive Vella & viewingmalta.com
The Chinese Garden of Serenity may be slightly off the standard, everyday track, but it’s well worth the effort. Its focus on forms and balance will set you straight, as might the Chinese romantic comedy, Go Lala Go, being screened there tonight as part of the 11th edition of the Summer Chinese Film Festival. The story centres on Du Lala who is struggling to find the time needed to fulfil both her work and family commitments (sound familiar?)
Tuesday, 28 August & Thursday, 30 August from 7.30pm: The Heiresses – Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta; Thursday, 30 August from 8pm: Cinemoon, At the Altar – The Gut, Valletta; Tuesday, 28 August from 8pm: Dirty Dancing – The Cinebar by Citylights

Dirty Dancing & Cinebar / Facebook
One of the capital’s main cinemas may be closing down sometime soon, but we hope these screenings, which are popping up all over the capital, will hold the fort. This week, a mix of golden oldies and newer classics will get the star treatment in Valletta: tomorrow and Thursday, check out Berlinale winner The Heiresses, described as possessing an “acute observation of characters and social context in its ultra-naturalistic performances” by The Hollywood Reporter, while the street festival Cinemoon is back on Thursday with more outdoor screenings, this time at The Gut. But, for those craving something steamier than a boiling kettle, head to the Cinebar at Citylights for Dirty Dancing and let yourself go.
Catch him while you can:
Tuesday, 28 August from 8pm: Last of the Greats – The Gut, Valletta

The Gut / Facebook
Have you ever imagined what the Gut – that infamous stretch at the lower end of Strait Street known for revelry, long nights and debauchery – may have really felt like back in its heyday? Well, drummer Joe ‘Bibi’ Camilleri does not need to imagine: he just needs to remember. At the age of 12, Bibi played in the watering-holes lining Strait Street and went on to forge a well-respected musical career. He is known to have inspired legions of younger musicians and, tomorrow night, together with the rest of the Strait Street Trio, he will be inspiring audiences in the place where the walls still echo of past tunes – The Gut.
