What's on this week: 16-19 April
It’s been muggy these last few days, but standby for some sunshine in the events calendar!

Order a drink and enjoy the music:

Tuesday, 17th April, 8:30pm – 11:30pm: Vintage Brew – Cork’s, St Julian's; Thursday, 19th April, 7pm – 11pm:  Spring Beer Celebration - Cafe Society, Valletta; Thursday, 19th April, 7pm – 11pm: Jeudi Jazz – Offbeat, Valletta.

If you like to have a drink after work while listening to some funky beats, there’s plenty of options to choose from this week. Some of Malta’s most popular hang out spots are aiming to relax and entertain: tomorrow, Cork’s Bar in Balluta Bay will be serving some vintage brew and playing blues and classic rock while, on Thursday, you have two options to choose from! Both Café Society and Offbeat will be showcasing great music and fantastic drinks. Entrance is free – but do yourself a favour and order a drink at the bar.

Marvel at the world’s cultural talents:

All week: Malta International Music Festival – various locations in Valletta & Floriana.

The Malta International Music Festival is one of the island’s most surprising music festivals, showcasing the work of highly acclaimed world-famous musicians. This week, we’re in for a treat. A gala concert is being organised tonight, as part of the festival, featuring soloists from the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra. Tickets here. The rest of the week will see piano recitals, chamber music and spectacular concerts all vying for attention in this celebration of international music. For tickets to any event, click here

Order some entertainment:

Thursday, 19th April, 7:30pm: The Square – Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta.

The Square and Spazju Kreattiv

Winner of the Palme d’Or at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, The Square (2017) directed by Ruben Östlund, is a knife-sharp satire on art, culture and communication in the digital age. It stars Claes Bang (The Bridge), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale, Mad Men) and Dominic West (The Wire). Christian (Bang) is a divorced but devoted father of two, and the respected curator of a contemporary art museum in Stockholm. He’s gearing up to launch their next exhibition, The Square, a daring installation examining altruism and our duty to help others. However, Christian’s own views on social responsibility are put to the test when he becomes the victim of a scam, forcing him to question the world around him and his place within it. Click here for tickets.

Add a sprinkling of art:

Wednesday 18th April – 24th May: Art Additives – Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta & Thursday 19th April from 6:30 – 7:30pm: Enigmatic Art - Famous paintings that keep us guessing - DFASinMalta, St Paul's Bay.

Art Additives and Spazju Kreattiv

You don’t need to be a serious art connoisseur to appreciate something new – and something classic – this week. Head to Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta on Wednesday at 6:30pm for a presentation entitled An Old-New Genre: Visual Music, given by Zsolt Gyenes, curator of VAC on the theme of visual acoustics and part of the Art Additives series of events. The presentation will be followed by an exhibition tour led by the curator himself. A bit further north, some of the world’s most mysterious artworks will be discussed during Enigmatic Art - Famous paintings that keep us guessing. Scholars have been puzzling over pictures like Giorgione’s Tempest, Leonardo’s Mona Lisa and Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks for centuries, but why do some paintings have these enigmatic qualities? Are there particular techniques that artists use to achieve them? And what do these paintings tell us about our world – and ourselves? For tickets, click here.

All week: Valletta International Visual Arts Festival – Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta.

VIVA via Facebook

Also at Spazju Kreattiv, this year’s Valletta International Visual Arts Festival plans to create a unique platform for contemporary art in Malta. And, with a wide variety of local and international artists presenting recent work or collaborating in joint projects, VIVA is creating new international networks which will last far beyond the festival itself.

Pour some water:

Thursday, 12th April – Sunday, 13th May 2018: Imagine Water, Catch The Drop: Exhibition– Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta.

The scarcity of water will become one of the most pressing issues of our time, and the future. And this exhibition is aiming to explore meaningful, creative and experimental art through a series of painting workshops and lectured field trips to raise awareness on the importance of water to the Maltese Islands. This forms part of the nation-wide Catch the Drop campaign (a national environmental water conservation and educational campaign) consisting of a collaboration between local and international artists as well as 150 students from four different schools in Malta and in Gozo.

And eat:

Tuesday 17th - Friday 20th April, 12:30pm – 2:30 pm &  7:30pm – 10pm: Lunch and Dine at the ITS' Teaching Restaurants – various ITS locations.

Institute of Tourism Studies/Facebook

The Institute of Tourism Studies is known for the outstanding contribution it has made to the training and sustainability of the servicing industries functioning within the local tourism sector. Some of Malta’s best chefs and hospitality specialists were trained here. This week, the school is giving you the opportunity to enjoy the different eating experiences at one of the Institute's teaching restaurants. Each restaurant offers a selection of refined dishes at affordable prices, starting from as little as €7 for a three-course meal. Students from various culinary, pastry-making, management and service programs handle the preparation of the dishes and desserts, as well as their service, as part of their practical courses.
