What's on this week: 1 – 4 October
A week full of culture – whatever your taste!

Reviving the past:

All week from 8am – 4pm: The Discovery of a Phoenician Shipwreck - Heritage Malta’s Gozo Area Office, Exhibition Hall, Cittadella, Gozo

What

Heritage Malta

In 2007, just off Xlendi, a cryptic shipwreck was discovered. Extensive research – using state of the art technology - determined it was a Phoenician ship dating back to 700BC, making it one of the oldest, and most fascinating, archaeological discoveries in the Mediterranean. This exhibition aims to tell the story of the people it transported and their way of life; the movements of trade and people across the seas at the time and the meticulous restoration project which was carried out. Well-worth making the trip to Gozo for!

Wednesday, 3 October and Thursday, 4 October at 7.30pm: An Invitation to Taste History - Malta Maritime Museum, Birgu

What

Heritage Malta

Forget your fancy 21st century dining experiences – the new flavours to experience are those inspired by the past. This week, Heritage Malta is offering the opportunity to savour three different pasta dishes, recreated using recipes and menus from history. The aim is to introduce people in the here and now to their cultural heritage, encouraging an appreciation of the rich diversity of what has been. Free flowing Pinot Noir from Burgundy, Chablis, Gewürztraminer, port and fine rum from the Caribbean are being promised – so there’s more than one reason to go!

Mid-week music and film:

Wednesday, 3 October from 8pm: Cliff Zammit Stevens' 10th Anniversary Concert - St. George's Square, Republic Street, Valletta

What

Cliff Zammit Stevens / Facebook

If you’ve seen the billboards set up at key points around the island advertising the 10th anniversary concert of Cliff Zammit Stevens and wondered ‘who?’, Wednesday is your chance to discover the singer, live at St George’s Square in Valletta. The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) will be accompanying Zammit Stevens, as will the ever-popular Ira Losco, who has collaborated with him on the track Xemx. Tickets from here.

Tuesday, 2 October at 8.30pm: The Man Who Wasn't There – The Cinebar by Citylights, Valletta; Tuesday 2 October from 7.30pm: Fishers of Men – Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta

What

Spazju Kreattiv

And Valletta hosts two more events aimed at the arts crowd – in this case aiming to attract cinephiles. On Tuesday, the Cinebar by Citylights (if you haven’t been yet: what are you waiting for?) will be screening the Coen Brothers’ The Man Who Wasn’t There (2001), starring Billy Bob Thornton. On the same night, Spazju Kreattiv will be hosting a documentary, titled Fishers of Men, which follows migrant NGO, MOAS, on their journey through the Med to rescue migrants lost at sea. Invaluable, and thoughtful, filmmaking.

Of books and boards:

Thursday, 4 October at 8pm: Us/Them - The Splendid, Strait Street, Valletta; from Thursday, 4 October at 1pm: Heritage and History Book Fair - Notre Dame Gate, St Edward's Street, Birgu

What

Us / Them / Facebook

The Splendid, towards the bottom of Strait Street, an old building being used for unique productions and musical recitals, is playing host this week to Us/Them, an hour-long performance retelling the story of the terrorist attack which took place in a school in Beslan, Russia. The siege lasted three days and the massacre left 334 dead, including 186 children. While it doesn’t aim to be light viewing, it promises to be memorable. And, earlier on in the day, Birgu is also playing host to some thought-provoking material: the Heritage and History Book Fair will be showcasing (and selling) a vast selection of military history, general history, maritime, aviation, children’s, WWI and WWII books at special prices.
