What lies beneath! A look at the impressive water reservoir under the Arkadia complex in Gozo
Next time you visit the Arkadia shopping complex in Gozo’s capital, imagine this massive reservoir hidden beneath your feet! This large underground structure once collected water for the steam-powered flour mill, known locally as the 'PAX' Flour Mill, which was built in 1890.

The man behind its construction, Francesco Galea, earned the nickname 'Tal-Erbgha' (meaning 'of the four') because he built four flour mills across Gozo.
While the reservoir is not open to the public, Steven Mallia has compiled fascinating images such as this one, as well as research on Malta's history of water conservation, which you can explore in his book and on his page 'Il-Gibjun'.
Any guesses on how much water the reservoir can hold?
