For many who pass through Mgarr Harbour to travel between Malta and Gozo, the port is considered a means to an end, rather than a stunning spot in its own right. But an old photo that surfaced on Facebook shows what a true beauty it was back in the day.

Taken some time in the 1920s, the photo shows a bare harbour with just a few settlements near the small jetty, and visible in the distance is the Neo-Gothic Lourdes Chapel.

The port was developed as we know it today throughout the 1960s and 70s, when ferry services began operating regular trips between the islands and terminals were set up in Cirkewwa and Mgarr.
