WATCH: Malta's own Rock 'n Roll king is back with a new single AND a musical in the making
Yup, you read that right.
Freddie Portelli needs no introduction. He is a national icon, and to many young and old, he is the man who made Maltese rock n’ roll sound awesome, something unheard of in his early days. Freddie was (and still is, at the age of 75) a bolt of energy on stage, and many of his stage tricks, phrases and even his music have become somewhat ingrained in our minds as a nation.
In 2019, Freddie Portelli becomes a musical. Yes, you read that right. After the success of Balzunetta Towers (2017) and Ħanina Maddalena (2018), Dominic Galea and Sean Buhagiar are teaming up again to make sure the original musical in Maltese becomes a staple event in the local cultural calendar. However, as the name of the musical implies, this year's edition will be even bigger: Il-Kbir Għadu Ġej. And, hearing that phrase, only one person comes to mind.
The musical is written by local heavyweight Malcolm Galea, who has scripted many successful shows and pantomimes. Sean Buhagiar will be back in the director’s seat following the sold-out show for Balzunetta Towers, while the musical arrangements and live band will be under the direction of Mro. Dominic Galea.
From what we're told, the creative team and the cast will be announced in the coming weeks, but word on the street is that we’re in for some big names both on stage and behind it.
Freddie has had one of the longest musical careers in Malta’s history, and he's made our hearts and feet groove to his catchy music for decades. And as if this musical wasn’t enough to bring back memories, Freddie released a brand new single, Il-Kbir Ghadu Gej, which is paving the way for the summer musical bearing the same name. There’s no doubt that this will be another hit for Freddie. The radio waves better be ready, because the King is back!
