The Phoenicia Malta proudly presents ‘Wastelands’, a solo exhibition by acclaimed Maltese artist Peter Seychell, open to the public until the 2nd of March 2025. Curated by Prof. Charlene Vella, this thought-provoking collection explores the fragile relationship between humanity and nature through evocative, surreal landscapes.

Peter Seychell, a self-taught artist with a background in the pharmaceutical industry, has rapidly gained recognition for his poignant environmental themes. Since his official debut in 2022, his work has evolved in both style and depth, offering a powerful commentary on ecological degradation.

‘Wastelands’ showcases Peter’s mastery across multiple media, including inks, acrylics, pastels, and charcoal, as well as the distinctive ink-and-fire technique on paper. The collection, dominated by wintry hues and intricate depictions of trees, twigs, and shrubs, creates an eerie yet mesmerising aesthetic. His landscapes, often devoid of human presence, emphasise nature’s solitude, serving as a silent protest against environmental destruction.

Notable pieces include Powder Dump, a work that finds beauty in desolation, and 木漏れ日 komorebi, a more detailed composition capturing the interplay of light through foliage. Whether through his meticulous realism or expressive abstraction, Peter’s artistic versatility shines throughout the exhibition.

Beyond aesthetics, ‘Wastelands’ carries a deeper message. Through his art, the artist urges society to reconsider the relentless expansion of urban spaces and instead advocate for the preservation of open, natural environments. His work is both a warning and an inspiration - an appeal to cherish and protect the delicate balance between despair and hope in our changing world.

This exhibition is a must-see for art enthusiasts and environmental advocates alike, offering a visual and emotional journey into Peter Seychell’s compelling vision of nature’s resilience.
