Vintage collection of Maltese Lira banknotes is bringing back the nostalgia
Do you remember the old Maltese Lira?

Jillian Mallia 25th February 2020

Have you ever seen the old Maltese Lira banknotes? Before we converted to using Euros back in 2008, the Maltese Islands had their own currency – the Lira (Lira Maltija). We had different coins and banknotes depicting various scenes of local everyday life.

This gorgeous vintage collection of a set of Maltese Lira banknotes is bringing back the nostalgia! The Lm2, Lm5, Lm10, and Lm20 notes feature Malta’s first female president, Agatha Barbara who was in office from 1982 to 1987 and is said to be the longest standing female Member of Parliament in Maltese political history.

Just like the Euro notes, the Lira ones had different colours and had Zewg Liri (Lm2), Hames Liri (Lm5), Ghaxar Liri (Lm10), Ghoxrin Lira (Lm20) written respectively on the front. Snapshots of Maltese life and important locations such as Marsaxlokk fishing village, the Grand Harbour and an auberge could be found overleaf.

Cool, right?
