Top 5 scenic routes in the north of Malta
Gorgeous spots to give you a pop of energy.

Kristina Cassar Dowling

Autumn is the season for adventure: walks in the countryside and getting lost in your thoughts. The north of Malta is so perfectly equipped with natural beauty, making up the perfect spots for scenic walks that energise you and lift your spirits. Here are my top five routes to enjoy this autumn:

Selmun

Selmun is a spectacular location for a Sunday picnic with unparalleled views, fresh air and open spaces. If you’re looking to enjoy beautiful sea views while sitting in a bed of grass, this is a great spot for you. The walk into the greener areas is quite a far way away from the castle, so either take your car a bit further or go light on the picnic bags.

Wardija

A high point overlooking St Paul’s Bay and beyond. A brisk hike up the hillside will take you to a plateau where you can sit and meditate on the complexities of life, alternatively, keep on walking and find a new route that will take you around the peak to unexplored land.

Golden Bay

Golden Bay boasts one of Malta’s most beautiful views. The golden sand, blue sea and green carpets that flank the bay make for the perfect trekking spot on a Saturday afternoon. Be careful where you step though, there are protected sand dunes in the area, so try not to tread on them as you appreciate the beauty.

Xemxija

This is not the Xemxija you know; this is the hidden Xemxija trail behind the Nature Reserve. Known as The Roman Road, this heritage trail is gorgeous. Keep your eyes peeled for the splendid architecture within the area as well as the beautiful garigue throughout the path.

Burmarrad

The Burmarrad trail is often frequented by scout groups and other organised ramblers. The track is accessible from the Burmarrad main road, where a steep hill guides trekkers up to a green haven. Keep on walking till your eyes are fixed on the local greenery and your lungs breath a sigh of relief in the crisp, fresh air.

Do yourself a favour and get yourself some good walking shoes this autumn - the splendour of the north will keep you coming back for more! Pack some water and a light snack if you'll be on the go, or go all out and deck out a little picnic area with a view.
