Upon entering the village of Zabbar, you might come across Triq Bajada, a street that may initially seem ordinary. However, a closer look reveals several features that offer fascinating glimpses into the village’s rich history.
One notable landmark is the Niche of the Madonna of the Military, known locally as 'Madonna tal-Armata'. This small tower features a niche-like sculpture of Our Lady, with a sign that reads 'Nostra Signora delle Armate' and the date 20th September 1898. While it’s unclear if this marks the building's construction, its distinctive tower-like facade adds to the intrigue.
Further down Bajada Street, another relic of history can be found - a remnant of the French blockade of 1798. Zabbar, being the closest town to French forces, was heavily bombarded during the siege. On a neighboring street, a French cannonball remains embedded in a house facade, a silent reminder of the past. The cannonball has since been secured with wires to remain in place, and is widely photographed by visitors who spot it.
Next time you're in Żabbar, look up - you might just spot more hidden treasures!
