Attention makeup geeks! This local girl, Janice, has creativity in bucket loads! The 22-year-old is studying to become an early years educator but has always had a passion for make-up ever since she was a little girl. Having come across some of her truly impressive makeup looks on Instagram, I simply had to find out more about her make-up journey.
“I remember being fascinated by my mother’s make-up collection and trying out each and every product she used to buy, especially lipsticks, which are still my favourite products to date. I used to sit and watch as she applied make-up and patiently wait for her to put some lip gloss or some nude sparkly eye shadow on me.” She also remembers having a fondness for Carnival season and was mesmerised by all the colourful and creative make-up on display. Who wouldn’t? Such a vibrant time!
Janice says she’s a self-taught make-up artist and hopes to further her studies on make-up after she finishes her university degree to inspire and help people who would like to explore the world of make-up.
So what inspires Janice to help her create such stunning looks?
“Coming from an artistic background, I find myself inspired by the simplest of things such as brush strokes on paintings, nature and my favourite TV shows,” she says. Quite the variety! “My main source of inspiration is often my nails. My nail technician is so artistic, she inspires me to transform that art onto my face so much so that I have a new segment on my Instagram where I create make-up looks inspired by my nails.”
Janice says that the key to creating such intricate looks is time and a heck of a lot of patience. Depending on the detail, it could take two to three hours to finalise a creative, innovative look and one and half hours to create a glam look. Woah. “Have you ever applied mascara and accidentally touched your nose with the tip of the wand? Or have you ever applied the perfect line wing on one eye and the other wing is a total disaster? It happens quite often to me and sometimes I just have to wipe everything away and start all over, but patience is key!” #RealTalk
“People think you need to spend a lot of money, which may be disheartening to those who may want to embark upon the make-up journey but may not be able to afford it. While it is true that make-up costs money, there are brands which sell amazing products with a pocket-friendly price,” she says, confirming that she uses affordable products to adhere to her followers’ budget so that anyone will be able to try to recreate any of her looks.
Janice’s inspiration
Currently, Janice’s favourite makeup looks are the artsy ones, as she calls them. “I have to think outside the box, be creative and get to learn a lot while experimenting with new materials, such as face painting.”
Having said all this, who’s Janice’s absolute fav make-up artists? “It would have to be Mario Dedivanovic, Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist. The looks he manages to create on her are mind blowing and whenever I need to create a wearable look, he is my go-to inspiration. I also find Jeffree Star to be very inspirational, having being able to build a huge and very successful makeup brand out of nothing.”
