Way back before McDonald’s arrived on our shores...
An interesting discovery made by a local in an old takeaway shop in Bormla has us feeling all nostalgic.
A menu board from the long forgotten Golden Chip Take Away, located on the hill going down to Cospicua marina, harks back to a time before international franchises made their way to our islands, and an honest burger and chips would only set you a back a few cents!
The discovery was made by the new owner, who was left stunned at the incredible time capsule, which dates back to the 1970s. “When we first had the chance to look inside the unconverted property, the first thing that caught my eye was the old yellowing takeaway menu board! It’s amazing to think that a burger and fries was just 40c in the old Maltese money — you can’t get much for that nowadays!”
The old shop is located on the corner of the hill going down to the marina
Describing the state of the shop today, which has been out of use for some time, she continues, “there’s still the old serving hatch onto the street intact in the property, which has been closed as a takeaway since then and used as a store room for furniture sold at car boot sales by the previous owner.”
And while she won’t let on what her plans for the place are just yet, she teases, “we have high hopes for the future of this little time capsule, and hope to breathe some fresh air into the place and get it back on its feet— with a little TLC of course!”
