That's amore! This couple are on a mission to try all the best pizzas in Malta & Gozo
You’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t like pizza, but this Maltese couple have taken it to the next level! Rebekah and Jean Paul are a duo on a quest to hunt down the best pizzas on the islands. And how will they do that? Well, by trying them all of course!
The pizza-loving pair have even started up The Malta Pizza Journal dedicated to their tasty tour! They document their journey with mouthwatering snaps from the country’s most loved pizza joints, from old-fashioned Maltese stone oven bakeries to classic Italian doughy delights, and they've even had a crack at making their own at home - the results look delectable!
We caught up with the brains behind the journey. Here’s what they had to share with Guide Me Malta!
Hey guys! We commend your mission! Who makes up the project and how did it start?
"We are a couple managing the page together. When we first met, we instantly bonded over food and, more specifically, pizza. We didn't know much about each other, but we knew that we both loved pizza a lot. Our first dates would always revolve around trying out new pizza places to the point that we had started a prioritized list (which we still use!) with all the pizza places we want to go to. We then eventually thought that it would be awesome to document all the pizzas we were trying on a Instagram profile."
What do you love about pizza?
"For us, pizza making is an art, and we came to realize this more and more by constantly trying to make restaurant quality pizzas at home from scratch. That is when you come to really appreciate how hard it is for pizzaiolos to truly master their craft. In Malta we are very lucky to have a high standard of food in general, and especially with pizza. You can find such a wide variety of different pizzas, from the traditional Italian Neapolitan and Roman style to the equally traditional Maltese and Gozitan ftira pizzas."
So far, where have you found your top stand-out pizzas?
"Choosing our top stand out pizzas is hard considering how different they all are, but our must-try pizzerias in Malta are: Sotto Pizzeria, Made in Sud and Emanuel's Bakery."
What are both your ultimate favourite toppings on a pizza?
Rebekah: "I can't pass on a pizza with tomato sauce, mozzarella di bufala, gorgonzola and pancetta."
Jean Paul: "My ultimate toppings would be Maltese sausage and sliced potatoes, the proper Gozitan way!"
What have been the weirdest toppings you've ever had on a pizza?
"It has to be a pizza with duck and hoisin sauce! We'd never had anything like it but damn it was good! There was also a rabbit pizza special at Emanuel's Bakery in Qormi. It was super - you should really try it!"
Where would you both like to travel to on your pizza quest?
"There are so many awesome pizza destinations around the world. We would really love to go to Chicago to try their massive deep dish pizzas, to New York to try their infamous dollar pizza slices and to the Middle East who have a lot of different pizzas to what we're used to."
Thanks for sharing guys! Happy pizza hunting!
