Take a walk through Malta's Three Villages and discover some hidden treasures
These are oldest villages in Malta, but what should you look out for?

Kristina Cassar Dowling

Attard, Balzan and Lija, commonly known as the Three Villages, are situated in the centre of the island of Malta and boast some of the most spectacular routes and scenes, hidden away in narrow alleys. Amidst the cobbled alleyways are luscious gardens, great eateries and vibrant pubs, just waiting to be discovered. Some of the greatest must-visit spots in the area include the following!

San Anton Gardens

San Anton are beautiful gardens where you can sit, relax, read a book and watch the peacocks. Yes, actual peacocks! These gorgeous birds call the garden their home; they scurry across rooftops and settle in the large trees at night. Swans, ducks and other animals can also be spotted in the area.

Villa Bologna

This glorious building was once the reserve headquarters for the nation’s newspaper - The Times of Malta - since it served as a storage spot during the Second World War. Today, the grounds in Villa Bologna feature fresh crops, a beautiful garden and a ceramic studio. There’s a lot to take in while visiting the villa, especially if you’re into fine architecture.

Belvedere Tower

Speaking of architecture, the Lija Belvedere Tower is probably one of Malta’s most recognisable monuments. Often dubbed ‘The Wedding Cake’, the Belvedere Tower stands proudly in the middle of Lija’s entrance. Mostly appreciated during the darker hours of the day, when the structure is drenched in lighting for all to see, the site is a fixture in many images of the area.

Zmerc

All this beauty getting you thirsty? No problem. This Balzan based pub is famous for its energetic environment and its hearty servings of free nibbles. Drink up, and then drink some more - the food just keeps on coming! Zmerc is a great place to meet up with some friends to catch up on life and enjoy the great music and fare.

Bahia

If you’re looking for exquisite food and a mind-blowing dining experience where the service is unbelievable and the wine list cannot be better, Bahia is probably your best choice. And best news yet? It’s situated right behind the Lija Parish church, just up the parvis, through the narrow streets, by some of the village's stunning houses.

There’s so much more to discover in the Three Villages. Keep your camera at the ready since you'll definitely want some Insta shots to record the experience!
