Meet Kevin and Hobbes! Two tiny hedgehogs in Malta who are defying the odds

Two tiny hedgehogs are making remarkable progress after arriving at Nature Trust in Malta in a dangerously fragile condition.

Kevin and Hobbes were rescued at the beginning of July, both far too young and small to survive without help. Kevin was found on a factory floor in Kordin, covered in black oil and weighing just 13g, while Hobbes was discovered by a farmer in Marsascala at only 26g.

Their recovery has involved weeks of round-the-clock feeds, sleepless nights and plenty of anxious moments, but the two little fighters have continued to grow stronger.

Gradually, Kevin and Hobbes learned to eat independently and began showing more of the feisty personalities expected of healthy young hedgehogs. They have now reached another important milestone, moving from their foster carer, one of Nature Trust’s rehabilitation volunteers, to the organisation’s rehabilitation centre.

There, they will continue to grow, gain weight and develop the skills they need before eventually returning to the wild.

For now, their job is simple: eat, grow and learn to be proper hedgehogs. Once they are strong enough, they will be released back into the wild, with Nature Trust promising to share videos of their return.

Nature Trust also reminds the public that hedgehogs are lactose intolerant and should never be given cow’s milk.

Anyone who finds an injured or endangered wild animal is urged to contact the Wildlife Rescue Team Malta on 99999505.

Stay strong, Kevin and Hobbes!
