Summer is not going quietly, with the Maltese Islands Weather warning that the final days of meteorological summer could bring another prolonged spell of intense heat.

According to the latest forecast, temperatures are expected to climb to 37°C or higher for between five and seven consecutive days, potentially making it one of the most intense periods of heat Malta has experienced this summer.

The forecast comes after the islands endured a particularly hot summer, including a record-breaking spell in July when temperatures soared above 40°C for several consecutive days. Malta subsequently experienced another period of intense heat in August, with the Meteorological Office warning of temperatures reaching 36°C and feeling significantly hotter due to humidity.

The upcoming conditions are expected to bring largely sunny and dry weather, with little relief from the heat during the day. The prolonged nature of the forecast means that temperatures could remain elevated well into the night, making it difficult for homes and buildings to cool down.

For those spending time outdoors, the return of extreme temperatures means taking precautions will be particularly important. People are advised to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day, stay well hydrated and take extra care of elderly people, young children and other vulnerable individuals.

With meteorological summer officially coming to an end, the forecast suggests Malta could be heading into September under the grip of one final, and potentially very intense, burst of summer heat.
