Swift action! Turtle Mira rescued from life-threatening entanglement off Migra Ferha
Last weekend, a remarkable rescue took place off Migra Ferha. Three individuals, Katya Agius, Daniela Agius, and Sharon Bonnici spotted a turtle struggling in the water, entangled in metal and rope.
Acting quickly, they contacted the Wildlife Rescue Team Malta Emergency Line and stayed onshore, keeping a watchful eye until the rescue could be coordinated.
The turtle, later named Mira, was some distance from the shore, prompting coordination between the Civil Protection Malta and the Armed Forces of Malta. The Civil Protection dinghy was dispatched, successfully locating and retrieving Mira. She was then brought safely to shore and immediately transferred to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.
Mira suffered serious injuries: her front flipper was severely swollen and entangled, causing damage to her face and carapace. The team’s veterinarian is currently assessing her condition and devising a treatment plan, with close monitoring required for her recovery.
All rescued animals are protected species and keeping them as pets is illegal in Malta. Wildlife Rescue Team Malta urges anyone spotting injured wildlife to call 99999505.
Thanks go to the public, vets, and dedicated volunteers whose vigilance and care make rescues like Mira’s possible.
Stay strong, Mira!
