87-year-old Brigadier Maurice Calleja, a former commander of the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM), passed away suddenly last night.
Maurice was well known for his expertise in weapons handling, serving as a court ballistics expert even after retirement.
The late commander studied at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, an experience that led him to serve with RMA regiments between 1954 and 1964.
He was later posted to Germany with the British Army of the Rhine as a transport major up to 1968.
Maurice’s experience in the army was extensive and led to him becoming a commander of the army’s Task Force in the 1980s. After that, he was promoted to deputy commander of the Armed Forces of Malta and later on to Brigadier.
Maurice Calleja remained close with the army even after his retirement and kept in touch with his old colleagues.
His grandson, Marc Kane Cachia, shared a heartfelt tribute honouring his memory.
“You are my hero and a true inspiration! Not only for me but also for what you did for this country. Such a gentleman with a massive heart and only love to give. You have taught me so much growing up, and I will never forget those days. You inspired me in so many ways.”
