Some Benna products may be a bit harder to find on supermarket shelves after this summer’s exceptionally high temperatures took their toll on Malta’s dairy cows.

Malta Dairy Products has informed customers that the intense summer heat placed “significant stress” on the local dairy herd, resulting in a temporary reduction in fresh milk production.

"While lower milk volumes are normal during the summer months, this year the impact has been more pronounced, and as a result availability of some Benna products may occasionally be limited,” it said.

The cooperative said it is working closely with local dairy farmers and production teams to maximise the milk available and ensure the best possible supply of its products to the market.

Heat is challenging for dairy cows, who struggle to stay cool when exposed to high temperatures.

When cows overheat, it can lead to lower feed intake, reduced milk production, and changes in milk quality.

Malta experienced a particularly hot summer this year, with temperatures regularly rising above 40°C.
