Street art! Have you ever seen the beautiful paintings that adorn Mellieha’s stairs and walls?
If you’ve ever strolled through the streets of Mellieha, you might have noticed that this charming town isn’t just rich in history, breathtaking views and steep hills (whew!) - it’s also a canvas for some incredible street art.
One of the most striking murals can be found at the entrance to the World War II shelters, featuring 'Il-Madonna tal-Ghar' (Our Lady of the Cave) beside a sweet image of a young boy petting a cat. The mural plays with perspective, creating optical illusions when viewed from different angles - no two photos of it are the same!
The artist behind this stunning piece is Lewis Zammit, a talented creative dedicated to bringing Malta’s walls, pavements and stairways to life. Another work of his in Mellieha features an eye-catching luzzu - Malta’s traditional fishing boat - painted during Iljieli Mellehin in 2022 with the help of fellow artist Pierre Zammit.
But his artistic touch isn’t limited to the north! In Senglea, another of Lewis Zammit’s works tells a powerful wartime story, depicting a soldier standing guard as two children explore the rubble - a poignant reminder of Malta’s resilience during World War II.
Next time you’re exploring Mellieha or Senglea, keep an eye out for these hidden artistic gems. Snap a photo, soak in the creativity, and appreciate the way can art breathe new life into Malta’s streets.
