Freedom Day’s almost upon us, and Malta’s gearing up to celebrate this momentous day!

It’s been a whopping 43 years since British troops and the Royal Navy completely withdrew their operations from Malta, marking the first time in a millennium of Maltese history when the islands were not housing a foreign power’s military base.

Soon after this event, 31st March was made into a public holiday which the country now uses to celebrate its freedom.

If you’re not yet sure how you’re going to be spending this public holiday, we summed up some of the hottest events going down in Malta on Freedom Day for you to choose from, so take your pick!

A musical display at Valletta’s St George’s Square

Head off to Malta’s iconic capital and stare in awe as the Malta Police Force teams up with the Armed Forces of Malta to give spectators a bombastic musical performance.

A commemorative ceremony at Floriana’s War Memorial

Keep exercising your patriotic spirit by heading down to Floriana’s War Memorial, where the President, Prime Minister, and Leader of the Opposition pay tribute to all those that fought for the country’s freedom.

Another commemorative ceremony at Vittoriosa’s Freedom Day Monument

A similar ceremony to that in Floriana is set to be held in front of Vittoriosa’s Freedom Day monument. This is the very same spot where former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff lit up the torch of freedom when the British troops left Malta for good.

The bi-annual Regatta at Valletta’s Grand Harbour

As soon as all the aforementioned ceremonies come to a conclusion, the iconic Maltese regatta is set to kick off from Valletta’s Grand Harbour. The rowing competition will start at 12:30pm and is set to consist of 11 races separated by 25-minute intervals. Who’s your pick for the win?

A re-enactment at Fort St. Angelo

The fort at the heart of the Grand Harbour will host an event titled ‘Colours at Fort St.Angelo’, featuring the Royal Navy Association (Malta Branch) and local re-enactment group Malta Command. The fort will be open from 9:30am to 1:30pm and tickets will be available at the door.

A Concert of Mediterranean Music in Gharb, Gozo

If you’re heading off to the sister island of Gozo, you can treat your ears to an evening of jazz music in Gharb. Belgian saxophonist and jazzman Fabrizio Cassol will be leading the concert. The concert is set to start at 7:30pm at the Gharb Square and is completely free.
