For the very first time in its 70-year tradition of summer Shakespeare, the Malta Amateur Dramatic Club (MADC) is taking on one of the Bard’s most epic and emotional tragedies: King Lear.
Set against the lush backdrop of San Anton Gardens in Attard, this year's Shakespeare production will run from 18th–21st and 23rd–27th July at 8pm, offering audiences a gripping evening of betrayal, pride, and power struggles beneath the summer sky.

Directed by Chris Gatt, this long-awaited MADC debut of ‘King Lear’ comes with an early bird ticket offer – currently available via www.madc.com.mt for a limited time. Whether you're a lifelong Shakespeare fan or new to his work, this production promises a timeless tale brought to life with the dramatic flair that his plays inevitably bring.
The production boasts a Game of Thrones-inspired visual style, with costumes designed by Nicole Cuschieri, evoking the grandeur and decay of a kingdom in crisis.
Taking on the title role is Stephen Oliver as the tragically flawed monarch who tests the loyalty of his daughters with devastating results. Faye Paris and Daniela Carabott Pawley portray the scheming Goneril and Regan, while Melissa Mercieca brings depth and dignity to Cordelia, the youngest daughter who refuses to flatter her father.
The all-star cast also includes Michael Mangion as the Earl of Gloucester, Simone Ellul as the Duchess of Kent, and Edward Caruana Galizia as the Duke of Cornwall, alongside a strong supporting ensemble.
As always, MADC's Shakespeare at San Anton is perfect for both theatre enthusiasts and families. This year’s production is recommended for ages 10 and above.
Don't miss the chance to experience Shakespeare under the stars – a cultural highlight of Malta’s summer calendar.
