Say what? Teatru Malta's new Christmas panto will be performed IN THE DARK
A performance with a unique multi-sensory twist.

December brings along with it one of the much-awaited events of the year: the Christmas pantomimes! The Maltese love their annual trip to the theatre for some laughter and family time, and Gawgaw is one of the pantomimes being held this year... but is nothing like we’ve ever experienced before!

In collaboration with the Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability (CRPD), Gawgaw is the first panto to be performed in the dark. Yes, you read right. A performance in pitch darkness with a unique multi-sensory twist. Filled with eccentric characters, familiar tunes, and one over-the-top dame, it’s a fantastic experience for all the family to enjoy!

We spoke to Teatru Malta's Alessia Caruana, who gave us a rundown of what people should expect from the innovative show. “The performance is a completely audio-sensory production, putting people in the world of those who are visually impaired. The audience will receive headphones using binaural technology before entering a dark room, hearing everything but seeing nothing. During the performance, the cast will be performing live in another room, recording everything in real time, and streaming it through the headphones.” It's a unique concept, with the main aim being to promote inclusivity in our community.

The brains behind the show are the talented Marta Vella and Vikesh Godhwani. The cast includes Joseph Zammit, a renowned panto actor; Philippa Cassar, part of the sister duo The New Victorians; 13-year-old Samuel Farrugia, who is a spokesperson for the visually impaired and has just published his first children’s book Samuel and the Magic Tooth; and Chucky Bartolo as the Dame.

Gawgaw – A Panto in the Dark is being held at the Planetarium Hall at Esplora Interactive Science Centre in Kalkara between 19th and 23rd December, and is endorsed by Her Excellency President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca. Tickets will be out soon on teatrumalta.org.mt
