The Parish Church of Ħal Kirkop is once again shining in all its splendour following the successful completion of an extensive restoration project. Thanks to this meticulous conservation effort – made possible in part through the contributions of local parishioners – the Maltese stone was carefully cleaned, and deteriorated marble elements were replaced. The project adhered to modern conservation principles, ensuring that both the structural integrity and aesthetic beauty of the building were preserved.
The Church of Saint Leonard (San Leonardu), originally built in the 16th century, was expanded in 1706, as noted in the inscription above its main entrance. The titular painting, created by Maltese artist Rocco Buhagiar, depicts Saint Leonard wearing the habit of the Benedictine Order, as the patron saint of prisoners. The church is also home to the relics of Saint Benedict the Martyr, which were gifted to the parish in 1790 by Pope Pius VI at the request of Dun Giuseppe Maria Callus.
