This historic house is located within the walls of the Citadel in Victoria.
A fascinating chapter of Gozo’s domestic heritage has been brought back to life, with the left wing of the Gran Castello Historic House now open to visitors once again following a year of restoration works.
Located within the historic walls of the Citadel in Victoria, the Gran Castello Historic House is a remarkable cluster of interconnected dwellings that offers a unique insight into everyday life in Gozo centuries ago. The complex dates back to the late Middle Ages, with its buildings originating from the late 15th and early 16th centuries.
With the restoration works now complete, visitors can explore the historic house in its entirety, taking a closer look at the different spaces and features that tell the story of traditional Gozitan life.
The experience goes beyond the architecture itself. Inside, visitors can discover period interiors, traditional crafts and household objects, as well as agricultural tools that shed light on the island’s rural way of life.
One of the site's most distinctive features is its beast-driven mill, which demonstrates how essential animal power once was to everyday domestic and agricultural activities. The complex also includes a traditional garden featuring local fruit trees, plants and herbs.
The left wing provides another perspective on life within the historic homes, with a particular focus on the servants' quarters and the contrast between the living conditions of the household's wealthier residents and their servants.

Originally opened to the public as a Folklore Museum in 1983, the site has since been transformed into a Historic House, preserving an important example of Gozo’s late-medieval domestic architecture.
The reopening gives visitors a renewed opportunity to step back in time and experience the sights, sounds and traditions of everyday Gozitan life within the Citadel.
