Rare sighting! Rainbow Runner fish spotted for the first time in Maltese waters
The fish has distinctive yellow lines running along the length of its body

This summer has been an active one for interesting sea creatures spotted in local waters, and here’s another one!

The local marine biologist Alan Deidun has shared the news and a video of a Rainbow Runner spotted in a yacht marina area – a species of fish that’s been seen in the Mediterranean region, but never before in Maltese waters.

This fish, also known as the Hawaiian salmon or Elagatis bipinnulata, is native of the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, and is easily distinguished by its body shape, and the unique colouration which gives the fish its name, particularly the yellow stripes that run along its body.

If you plan on a snorkel or a dive any time soon, make sure to keep your eyes open for some colourful fish!

Have you spotted any interesting creatures at sea recently?
