While patrolling Gozo in the areas of Sannat, Għasri, and Żebbuġ, the Malta Ranger Unit came across a distressed Eurasian Hobby near Wied il-Mielaħ, thanks to a sharp-eyed volunteer who first spotted the bird.
This striking bird of prey was found with part of its wing feathers missing – a condition commonly linked to gunshot wounds – though the vet was unable to confirm the exact cause of the injury.
Thankfully, the bird is now in good hands. It was immediately transferred to BirdLife Malta, where their experienced team will care for it and support its rehabilitation in the hopes of a full recovery.
In their social media post announcing the rescue, the Malta Ranger Unit took the opportunity to urge the public to stay observant and proactive when out in nature. If you notice anything unusual or concerning in the countryside, don’t hesitate to reach out – it could save a life! You can message the Rangers on WhatsApp 24/7 at 7937 8118.
They also expressed a clear goal – more Ranger boots on the ground in Gozo. With increased support, they’re aiming to expand their presence and better protect the island’s natural beauty and wildlife.
Well done to everyone involved in this rescue!
