Over a century old photo! Impressive shot shows Xlendi celebration during the early 1900s

A photo that was taken in what seems to be early the early 1900s gives us a glimpse into what Malta and Gozo looked like over a century ago.

This rare shot was taken at Xlendi Bay where people seemed to all have gathered in one large crowd for some kind of celebration.

The photo was shared by Lars Newton on the public group ‘Old photos of Malta’.

It is here that many jumped onto the comment section and speculated that the photo was likely taken when the traditional game of gostra was taking place. This is probably why there was such a huge crowd. Afterall, the gostra is still a popular form of entertainment to this very day.

Today, the bay at Xlendi has pretty much disappeared. In fact, for people to go in the water, they now have to make use of ladders but in this photo the bay was still very much prominently in tact.
