One of Valletta’s most versatile buildings! Spotlight on Palazzo Verdelin and its various uses throughout the centuries
The building has proven its adaptability throughout the centuries

St George’s Square in Valletta, one of Malta’s most walked-through squares, is surrounded by truly imposing structures, including the remarkable Grandmaster’s Palace. A lesser-known yet equally impressive building stands just a 90-degree turn from the palace, another palace that goes by the name of Palazzo Verdelin.

Now housing Valletta’s police station and the restaurant Gracy’s, Palazzo Verdelin is one of the few Rococo-style buildings in Malta and is believed to have been built around 1650. In 1662, it was granted to Jacques de Verdelin, a French Knight of the Order of St. John and the grandson of Hugues Loubenx de Verdalle, who held several important positions, including Commander of Artillery, Auditor of Accounts, and Grand Commander.

This building has a fairly colourful history, having been put to various uses throughout the centuries. For instance, the prominent part of the building that can be seen from St George’s Square housed the Vicary's Hotel during the British period, which was one of the first hotels in Malta. The building subsequently housed the Civil Service Sports Club. For some years in the early 1900s, it hosted the youth organisation known as La Giovane Malta, set up by Enrico Mizzi, son of Fortunato Mizzi, a key figure in Malta's history.

Having witnessed countless transformations over the centuries, Palazzo Verdelin has seen Valletta change drastically. From a noble residence to a hub for social gatherings, it remains an enduring part of the city's architectural heritage.
