The Chamber of Pharmacists is speaking out on Malta’s current COVID-19 situation and the “relatively high number of deaths of elderly persons reported over the last 10 days.” In a statement, the chamber shared their thoughts.

“As citizens of a democratic European member state with a long tradition and culture of respecting and protecting our elderly and the vulnerable in our society, it becomes our collective responsibility, spearheaded by effective and enforceable public health policies championed by the Government even more so during a harsh pandemic by a novel virus, as the SARS–COV–2, more so in the absence of a safe and effective vaccine.”

“The Kamra Tal-Ispizjara Ta’ Malta expresses its concern at the reported 23 victims of covid-19. In the Kamra’s opinion, the demise of persons as a result of covid -19, whatever their age, but regrettably mostly "young and old", and whether they had co-morbidities or not, is a serious indictment of how Government and others, have and are not protecting the most vulnerable of our society. Indeed, our revered elderly are starting to fall like flies. This is a serious indictment to all responsible. These persons deserved protection of course by those nearest to them, but , especially if institutionalized, also by state of the art, effective policies.”

The chamber has also offered its condolences to the families of the fallen victims. A minute of silence was observed at 10am across all pharmacies in Gozo “to remember all covid-19 victims to date.”
