We’re generally taught that autumn kicks off towards the second half of September, and whilst this is technically true, there’s more to the seasons than that.
The season commencing on 22nd September 2024 is formally known as ‘astronomical autumn’, however, the onset of September brings about a different type of autumn: what is known as ‘meteorological autumn’.
In fact, today marks the end of the meteorological summer and, in light of this, ‘meteorological autumn’ starts tomorrow, 1st September.
The meteorological seasons are defined in a very simple way, by grouping the twelve calendar months into four three-month periods based on similar air temperatures.
In light of this, meteorological autumn will last until 30th November, unlike astronomical autumn, which concludes on 21st December.
