8th September is a day to remember on the Maltese islands. Marking the triumph of the Maltese over the Ottoman Empire in the Great Siege of 1565, Victory Day boasts celebrations of different kinds, spread across the archipelago - namely, Naxxar, Senglea, Mellieha and Xaghra, Gozo for the feast of Il-Bambina and Valletta for the spectacular regatta that graces the Grand Harbour.
State ceremonies
If you are lucky enough to be on the islands for Victory Day, be sure to attend the state ceremonies that take up most of the morning, trickle into the afternoon and come to a serene end in the evening with a ceremonial mass followed by a fireworks display. Head to Valletta to watch the military parade in full swing, you might even catch a glimpse of the President as she inspects the Honour Guard. Lay some flowers by the Antonio Sciortino ‘Great Siege’ monument and head to the Grand Harbour for the afternoon festivities.
The regatta
The afternoon of 8th September is riveting, with rowing boats floating on the Grand Harbour waters, patiently waiting to start the race they’d been training the past year for. Feel the power and might of the Knights of Victory rush through the rowers as they make their way across the harbour for a traditional battle on the seas.
The feast of Our Lady as a Child
Also known as the feast of Maria Bambina and Our Lady of Victories, this yearly celebration focuses on the nativity of the Virgin. On the Maltese islands that only means one thing - it’s time for a festa. Colourful displays, fireworks, stalls packed with traditional delicacies and streetfood keep the crowds entertained till the night draws to an end.
Plan your day well, hit as many activities as you can and don’t forget to make the most of a fantastic national holiday!
