Movies in the garden! Malta's Kinemastik Film Festival celebrates 20 years this July
The night offers a dreamy blend of film and music

The annual Kinemastik International Short Film Festival will be celebrating its 20th birthday this year, lighting up its usual venue – the beautiful Msida Bastion Cemetery and Historic Garden – between the 26th and 27th of July, beginning at sunset.

The event showcases local and international filmmaking talent, screening short films that range from documentaries to fictional tales set in the Maltese islands, such as this year’s ‘Bahar Biss’, made by Berlin-based filmmaker Franziska Stenglin. Every year, a jury comprising local and international multidisciplinary artists come together for the selection of Best Film, and an Audience Award is presented to the crowd favourite.

Aside from film, the event also presents a musical element, as artists from all over the world join to form a curated musical journey for attendees that would like to soak in the beautiful views and ambience that the gardens provide. This year will see ‘Italians Do It Better’ label founder and producer, Johnny Jewel, performing a live audiovisual performance, with highlights from his contribution to film and TV scores, including the 2011 action thriller ‘Drive’ and David Lynch’s ‘Twin Peaks’.

Other guest performers will include DJs Desire, Dean Wengrow and Hassan Abou Alam, contributing to the atmosphere with some mellow electronic sounds.

Will you be attending this year’s Kinemastik Film Festival?
