Malta still on UK green list, while US advises against nonessential travel to the islands
So far, no quarantine has been imposed by UK on travellers coming from Malta.
After reports circled yesterday that Malta could be removed from UK’s green list, our islands haven’t been mentioned in the new list of countries that are now on Britain’s red list.
According to Sky News, Belgium, Andorra and the Bahamas have now been added to the UK’s quarantine list after a spike in cases. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps tweeted that travellers arriving in the UK after 4am on Saturday need to self-isolate for 14 days. So far, Malta hasn’t been added to this list.
On the other hand, the US CDC has advised against nonessential travel to the Maltese Islands, saying “COVID-19 risk in Malta is high.” The CDC “recommends travellers avoid all nonessential international travel to Malta” warning that if you contract the virus abroad, you may be isolated and not permitted to return to the US. Visitors who contract the virus in Malta do need to quarantine for the 14-day period before returning home, Prof. Charmaine Gauci confirmed earlier this week.
Currently, Malta's stats stand at 267 active cases that include clusters from mass events such as parties, festas and Paceville, a migrant cohort and other sporadic cases. Yesterday, Sahha reported that four of the 20 new cases were children.
