A silver lining to this gloomy weather...
It's pretty crazy to think that just two weeks ago we were soaking up the summer sun...
Whilst autumn - and all the gloomy weather that comes with it - can be pretty polarising, there is one thing that most Maltese people tend to enjoy at this time of year: snails.
Any Maltese nannu will be ever-so excited to go snail hunting after the first big storm hits the islands. After all, it’s time to cook up some delicious snail dishes (or ikla bebbux, as they would refer to it), with their newfound treasures, of course!
Eating bebbux is a long-standing Maltese tradition, although you may be more familiar with the French variety, known as escargot, which is also a delicacy, though usually served as a starter.
A popular Maltese dish is bebbux bl-arjoli - snails with garlic. This is a stew best served with a sizable helping of Maltese bread. For a more modern take of the traditional dish, pop them on a barbeque with some lemon. Is your mouth watering yet?
Make a treasure hunt out of it!
Fancy trying it yourself? You can find them everywhere, and we mean everywhere! Check your garden, agricultural fields near your house, trees, grasslands, and or any rubble walls. And then, head home to prepare the bebbux feast of your life!
Have you ever tried this yummy delicacy?
