In the spotlight! Malta’s Caravaggio Wing shortlisted for prestigious international museum award
The innovative wing at St John's Co-Cathedral is competing in the Best Use of Digital – International category.
If you’ve recently visited St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta, you’ve laid eyes on a potential award-winner! The Caravaggio Wing at the cathedral has been shortlisted for a prestigious international accolade at the Museums + Heritage Awards.
The innovative wing is competing in the Best Use of Digital – International category, recognising projects that use technology to transform the way visitors experience history and art.
At the heart of the nomination is the powerful way the Caravaggio Wing reimagines how audiences engage with The Beheading of St John the Baptist by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, which is widely considered one of the most important paintings in the world.
Through immersive digital projections and cinematic storytelling, visitors are taken on a journey into Caravaggio’s turbulent time in Malta, offering deeper insight into both the masterpiece and the artist behind it.
The nomination places Malta alongside a shortlist of projects from 11 different countries, all recognised for pushing boundaries in museum storytelling and visitor engagement.
Among the shortlisted institutions are Qatar Museums, The ‘Mouthful of Dust’ experience at State Library Victoria (Melbourne), ‘The Director's Dilemma’ at Industrimuseet Horsens (Denmark), ‘An Immersive Digital Journey into Catalan Heritage’ by Catalan Heritage Agency and the National WWI Museum and Memorial (Kansas City, Missouri).
The winners will be revealed on 13 May during the official awards ceremony at the London Hilton on Park Lane.
Fingers crossed!
