Iconic! Trevor Zahra's play ‘Is-Surmast’ returns to Teatru Manoel 30 years after its debut
This April, Teatru Manoel will present a special production of ‘Is-Surmast’, a beloved play by Trevor Zahra, in celebration of its 30th anniversary. Running from the 4th to the 6th of April 2025, this iconic Maltese comedy-drama promises to captivate audiences once again with its timeless charm.
Directed by Joseph Galea, the production stars Charles Sammut in the title role of Carmelo Ciantar, an eccentric and endearing headmaster at a primary school.

The script of ‘Is-Surmast’ is adapted from Trevor Zahra’s novel of the same name, focusing on Carmelo, a character known for his unorthodox methods of managing both his school and personal life. As a headmaster, Carmelo ignores the rigid instructions of his superiors, opting instead to run the school based on his own whims and personal philosophies, inspired by his experiences at home and his admiration for Santa Filomena. However, his seemingly perfect world is turned upside down when an old family friend returns from England, threatening to disrupt the delicate balance he has established.

This special anniversary production boasts a talented local cast, with Charles Sammut leading the performance as Carmelo. The ensemble includes Mario Spiteri (Snitz), Andre Mangion, Ryan Mark Debattista, Antonella Galea Loffreda, Marceline Galea, Anthony Ellul, Claudia Mizzi, and Emanuel Cassar, along with several young performers portraying the school students. The original music for the play is composed by Albert Garzia, adding an extra layer of depth to the production.
Trevor Zahra, one of Malta’s most prolific and celebrated writers, is no stranger to acclaim. In 2020, he was honoured with the National Book Prize Lifetime Achievement Award for Literature, cementing his place as a key figure in local literature. His body of work spans over 130 books, earning him numerous accolades, including 19 National Book Prizes.

‘Is-Surmast’ will be performed from the 4th to the 6th of April, with showtimes at 7.30pm and a matinee on Sunday at 3.30pm. Tickets can be purchased online at Teatru Manoel, at the Box Office on Old Theatre Street, or by calling (+356) 21246389.
