How to make the most of Malta & Gozo's cliffs
Malta, Gozo and Comino's prominent cliffs are definitely a feature to exploit in the Maltese Islands.

Melanie Drury

The west side of the Maltese Islands is characterised by steep cliffs. In some parts, they stand hundreds of metres tall and drop straight down into the sea for several more. Whether standing at the edge of land's end or at sea-level as they tower above, the cliffs of Malta are nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Where to go

Where to find the most impressive cliffs on the Maltese Islands? These locations offer fantastic views:

Dingli Cliffs, Malta

One of the highest points of Malta, the Dingli plateau suddenly breaks off, dropping to the sea. Yes, it is quite impressive - the village of Dingli lies on a plateau some 250 metres above sea level. Come here to enjoy a walk along the edge of the cliffs during sunset. Look out towards the horizon with only sea and sky stretching ahead of you as far as the eye can see; it feels like standing at the edge of the world.

Wardija Punic Temple, Gozo

The views from this point include a truly impressive sight of the cliffs that feature along the entire west coast of Gozo, all the way to the Fungus Rock and where the Azure Window once stood. It can be tricky getting here and be aware that the Wardija Punic Temple is situated on private land; the effort is absolutely worth it, though. It is a wonderful trek, complete with a dash of history and enviable photo opportunity.

Santa Marija Tower at Crystal Lagoon, Comino

Perched on top of the cliffs surrounding the Crystal Lagoon in Comino is the Santa Marija Tower, a favourite sunset spot for anyone spending the night on the island. You'll enjoy a captivating view of the scattered islands that form part of Comino, with Gozo in the background. If you get to the Crystal Lagoon by boat, you have the additional feature of several caves burrowing deep into the cliff face.

What to do

Cliffs are great to stand on, giving the feeling of being perched high above the world so high. Other ways to enjoy cliffs beyond views is with access to and from the sea, with several activities exploiting these natural walls of rock and the waterbed below:

DWS, climbing & abseiling

Deep Water Soloing is essentially rock climbing without equipment, with a well managed fall bringing you down with a splash in the water. Climbing and abseiling are also big in Malta; deep valley walls are a favourite location yet some routes have also been established on cliff faces that lead more gradually down to the sea.

Cliff diving

Cliff diving is considered a dangerous sport - the water can break bones if you land incorrectly; we don't recommend you try this unless you are experienced. You could, however, start diving from some lower heights as possible in many locations around the coast of Malta, Gozo and Comino. Always ensure that the water is deep enough to break your fall without hitting the seabed or any hidden rocks.

Boating

A boat trip takes you to the foot of the cliffs and, as empowering as it feels to stand on top of them, it is humbling to stand below them towering above. The cliffs may drop as sharply as if one had cut them with a knife, while others feature caves and rubble that offer interesting rock formations and a variety of pioneer plants. Plus boating carries a bunch of other benefits!

They may not be as famous as the White Cliffs of Dover, but the cliffs of Malta are sure to impress. Make sure you experience them in some way during your visit to the Maltese Islands.
