Green hospitality! AX Sliema hotels certified as Malta’s first Global Sustainable Tourism hotels
AX Hotels have announced that AX The Palace and AX The Victoria in Sliema are the first hotels in Malta to achieve certification from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) for their sustainability practices.
This is a significant achievement that underscores AX Hotels’ commitment to environmental responsibility, positioning these two renowned and well-loved local hotels as leaders in sustainable tourism, both locally and internationally.
Achieving the GSTC certification wasn’t an overnight process—it involved a series of important changes, such as implementing new policies, reducing resource use, upgrading facilities, and educating both staff and guests about sustainability. Every step taken has been in line with GSTC standards, and the certification process, which includes a thorough evaluation, reflects AX Hotels’ ongoing dedication to environmental and social responsibility.
Claire Zammit Xuereb, Director of Hospitality & Care at AX Group, shared, ‘We are proud to continue leading the way in Malta’s hospitality sector, consistently setting new standards and embracing innovative solutions that benefit both our guests and the environment. We are committed to responsible, eco-conscious hospitality.’
James Galea, Hotel Manager at AX Sliema Hotels, added, ‘This is an ongoing journey, involving constant teamwork and commitment from all our team members. It builds upon our earlier Eco-Certification achieved through the Malta Tourism Authority, and we remain focused on striving to meet our sustainable targets.’
The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) is a globally recognised authority that sets the standard for sustainable practices within the tourism industry. Their criteria help businesses and destinations address key sustainability issues, from responsible resource use and waste management to community involvement and education.
