Situated in the serene Gozitan countryside stands one of the island’s most treasured historical landmarks; the oldest Basilica in Gozo. This sacred chapel dates back to 1738, when it was originally constructed as a place of devotion for locals and visitors who travelled from nearby villages to worship. Its spiritual significance quickly grew, drawing the faithful from every corner of the island.

In 1754, the chapel underwent a remarkable reconstruction, enhancing both its structure and its role within the community. It was later consecrated in 1789, a moment that marked its official recognition as a sanctified place of worship. This was no ordinary milestone; it became the very first countryside chapel in Gozo to be consecrated. Even more impressive is that it held this unique title for an astounding 161 years, standing alone as a symbol of unwavering faith and cultural heritage.

The Basilica remains a testament to Gozo’s rich religious traditions and architectural history. With its timeless stonework, peaceful surroundings, and spiritual atmosphere, it continues to attract visitors seeking both reflection and connection to the island’s past. To step inside is to step through centuries of devotion, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring Gozo’s heart and heritage.
