Get ready, Malta! Intensifying storm expected to bring heavy rain and thunder today
Thunderstorms may develop quickly!

Lyndsey Grima

A developing storm system to Malta’s southwest is rapidly strengthening and moving closer to the islands, bringing with it an increased likelihood of severe weather throughout the rest of the day. Maltese Islands Weather warn that the approaching storm clouds are intensifying, creating conditions favourable for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and even isolated hail.

As the system continues to edge towards the central Mediterranean, residents should prepare for sudden downpours and reduced visibility, particularly during peak bursts of rainfall.

Thunderstorms may develop quickly, accompanied by strong gusts of wind and occasional lightning strikes. Localised flooding in low-lying areas is also possible, especially where drainage systems are already saturated from recent rain.

The public is advised to remain cautious while travelling, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during the peak of the storm, and secure loose objects that may be affected by strong winds. Motorists should take particular care on wet roads, as conditions may deteriorate rapidly.

With the potential for hail and intense thunder at times, today’s weather could be among the more severe episodes seen in recent weeks.

Are you looking forward to today’s weather conditions?
